Project description

The first energy communities based on mostly very specific solutions have already been implemented in Austria. Primarily technical and economic aspects were addressed, the sustainability of energy communities was not examined. Due to the low economic advantages for the members of an energy community, however, non-financial aspects such as sustainability, team spirit and group dynamics, transparency, etc. are becoming increasingly important.

The following objectives are pursued in the UCERS project:

  • Development and implementation of a scalable and easy-to-use data exchange platform for energy communities (Community Data Exchange Platform)
  • Development and implementation of an operation and optimization platform for energy communities (Operation & Optimization Platform)
  • Implementation of a Citizen Science Platform for the continuous involvement of end users
  • Developing methods for evaluating the sustainability of energy communities
  • Analysis and comparison of the ecological effects as well as the contribution of different energy communities to sustainable development

Results:

  • Manufacturer-independent and freely available online data exchange platform (Community Data Exchange Platform) as well as operation and optimization platform (Operation & Optimization Platform)
  • Citizen Science Platform and network as well as tools (app / mobile website) to involve users
  • Practical experience from several test beds with regard to the acceptance and willingness of end users to participate in energy communities
  • Methods to evaluate the sustainability of energy communities
